Who we are (about our name)

Sobreviventes literally means "survivors" and our instructor gave the school its name after the 34-day war with Israel in the summer of 2006. The name was inspired by the fact that a core group of its founding members continued to train Capoeira during the war.

When we started (summer 2006)

Capoeira Sobreviventes was formed in May of 2006 as a result of there being no existing cultural center for training the Brazilian art form, despite the fact that there are thousands of Brazilian-Lebanese living in Lebanon today (and millions of Lebanese living in Brazil!).

Goals

Capoeira is not only a martial art form but rather a way of life as well as a new approach to life. Our goal is to expose capoeiristas (capoeira player/student) to a new world by teaching them new cultures, learning a new language (singing and rehearsing Capoeira songs), playing Brazilian musical instruments, gaining new physical and mental skills and increase ones self-confidence and self-determination.

About the instructor (Papagaio)

The school’s founder, Arbi Sarkissian is a long-time capoeirista who has been training Capoeira for around 10 years. He has been teaching the Sobreviventes in Lebanon for more than three years, with a membership base of over 35 capoeiristas from a wide cross-section of Lebanese inhabitants.
