VAM project "Jogo de Paz" (Game of Peace)
Summary of the project:

Jogo de Paz (JDP) is an initiative developed by Volta ao Mundo members in order to offer Capoeira training to challenged youth in Lebanon,
beginning with groups of children in the greater Beirut area and its suburbs. The project consists of a number of phases involving the target
group, currently from different public and private schools and social welfare centers for the youth (e.g. Insan Foundation) in greater Beirut.
The project will eventually lead to the development and publication of a training manual for peace building, tolerance, discipline and cooperation
using Capoeira as an educational and cultural tool that will be disseminated to other institutions and organizations. The trainings and activities
will be led by veteran members (graduated instructors) of Capoeira Sobreviventes, Filhos de Bimba and other visiting schools under the umbrella of
VAM’s initiative and coordinated by its members
Objectives of the project:
- Empowerment: Capoeira has proven to help the youth build self-confidence, self-respect, and personal growth.
- Peace Building: by channeling their energy and learning how to use their skills, Capoeira helps youth keep away from engaging in violent activities and steers them away from drugs.
- Discipline: Capoeira engages people towards establishing personal goals and requires a commitment and responsibility towards improving lives; it encourages youth to focus more on staying in school, thus preparing them for the job market.
- Dialogue, tolerance, and integration: Capoeira challenges people to understand and respect each others' differences and shortcomings and pushes them to excel in what they do in order to meet their goals. It is an art-form developed from different cultural contexts, and it facilitates dialogue and self-reflection thus allowing for integration.
